Round 1 Pick 21: Cincinnati Bengals select Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
The Bengals really thought about taking an Offensive Lineman with this pick but instead went with another playmaker for Dalton. Wright should be a perfect counterpunch to AJ Green. The two of them, along with TE Jermaine Gresham, will create mismatches all over the field for the savvy Dalton to exploit.
Round 1 Pick 22: Cleveland Browns select Courtney Upshaw, DE, Alabama
Cleveland shocks us again by selecting another defensive player in the 1st round, but with another choice coming in just 15 picks, they feel comfortable waiting to get the best skill player available in a draft with a lot of them who should be available later. Upshaw can start right away and gives Cleveland a play-making DE who always seems to be near the ball. Upshaw is a pure football player and Cleveland has now established its defense as a strength going forward.
Round 1 Pick 23: Detroit Lions select Mark Barron, S, Alabama
The Lions are in a very unfamiliar position, they are coming off a playoff season and expectations for next year are even higher. In order for them to improve upon last season's success they will need to improve their defense which finished last year ranked 23rd in Total Defense. The D line in Detroit is pretty solid and their Linebackers are serviceable. However their secondary is not very impressive, as shown during their Week 17 matchup against the almighty Matt Flynn (480 yards and 6 td's). Not only does Barron fill a huge need for the Lions he is also the best player available at the 23rd pick. Having started for 3 years under Nick Saban and winning 2 National Championships, the hard hitting safety is intelligent, experienced and can cover most TE's and RB's. Coming in at 6-2 218 lbs, he is larger than most safeties and also has good hands (7 ints his sophmore year and 13 total during his career). Barron should be a great addition to a porous secondary and at the same time he can help stop the run.
Round 1 Pick 24: Pittsburgh Steelers select Don'ta Hightower, ILB, Alabama
Roll Tide! This is classic Steelers. We immediately fill the vacancy of James Farrior with arguably the best inside linebacker in the draft, and certainly the best for the 3-4. Hightower is a beast that is quick enough to play outside, and physical enough to crush the run. He will excel in the aggressive Steeler defense, and he is a rare inside talent that also plays well as a nickel backer. The Steelers pick a leader that will live up to the high expectations of the Iron Curtain, and he will be the first step in rebuilding a defense that looked old at the end of the year. OL will need to be addressed soon, but look for the Steelers to add more talent on D for the rest of this draft.
