SKOHRboard & Stangs League 2011 NFL Mock Draft: Picks 15-18

Welcome to Day 4 of the SKOHRboard & Stangs 2011 NFL Mock Draft.  Today we'll feature the 15th through 18th picks in the upcoming draft.  After four QBs have already been selected is it possible we'll see more of them today or will some of the guys who've slipped because of all the QBs flying off the board finally be taken?

We have highly qualified NFL experts who have each been assigned the role of temporary GM for several NFL teams and we will go through the first two rounds selecting the best players for our respective teams.  While you follow along, I'd like to urge you to give us your feedback and please feel free to lobby for your respective team's GM to pick whatever player you feel is best suited to them.

Here are the GMs for each team.

Mutombo - Seattle, Carolina, Cleveland, Detroit, San Diego, Atlanta, Green Bay
Justin! - Minnesota, Denver, San Francisco, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, New Orleans
Joel - New York (G), Buffalo, Tennessee, Miami, Kansas City, Chicago, Oakland
Jeremy - Pittsburgh, Houston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Jacksonville, Indianapolis,
SKOHR -  Philadelphia, Arizona, Washington, Baltimore, New England, New York (J)

>>SKOHRboard & Stangs Mock Draft 2011, Miami Dolphins
Pick #15, Ryan Kerrigan, LB, Purdue<<
by Joel

A number have people have Miami taking Mark Ingram or Christian Ponder at this spot due to Miami's glaring weakness at both key positions. Chad Henne has fallen out of favor in Miami but Miami can't risk such a high pick on an iffy prospect like Ponder. Ingram wold be a great addition to this team but his knee problems are scary especially with such great value potentially available in later rounds at the RB position. Kerrigan gives this team the rush LB that this team is in desperate need of. With 33.5 career sacks against the very good O-lines of the Big Ten, Kerrigan is a proven rusher that can anchor a great linebacking core in Miami.

>>SKOHRboard & Stangs Mock Draft 2011, Jacksonville Jaguars
Pick #16, Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina<<
by Jeremy

Another year, another sigh of relief as David Garrard watches the Jags opt not to bring in a local Florida QB as a successor to his mediocre self. With Tebow last year and Ponder this year, the Jags still seem willing to wait until the correct man comes along, and they don't seem to think that a local fanbase will help move jersey sales: their only concern is for the product on the field.

With the Lions early snag of Smith, the Jags will have to wait a round or two to get the player needed to improve their secondary. Instead, they grab the last of the elite defensive play-makers in Robert Quinn. Rather than go through all of the defensive rankings from last year's team, let's just say that their play was rank. Quinn brings a great pass rush for a team that has to worry about Manning and Schaub four times per year, and plenty of other top AFC talent. He is a year removed from the field thanks to the NCAA's refusal to let a #1 draft pick discuss his future with agents and maybe get a few grand in the exchange, but that talent is still there. Quinn can see the field in multiple situations, either starting at defensive end or sometimes playing out of a standing position. He is not all they need to improve their defense, but he is definitely a step in the right direction.

>>SKOHRboard & Stangs Mock Draft 2011, New England Patriots
Pick #17, JJ Watt, DE, Wisconsin<<

The Pats have been rebuilding the defense for the past three years and they've done a good job but still need youth in some key spots. None of those spots take a higher priority than DE though. By grabbing Wisconsin's JJ Watt here the Pats get the kind of football monster they lost in the Seymour trade. Ironically this is the pick they received in that trade. Watt is 290 lbs and still one of the more athletic DEs in the entire draft class. His 10 yard split in the 40 was one of the best of anyone at the Combine this year. Watt's combination of size, speed, and athleticism makes him the most versatile defensive lineman in the draft outside of Dareus. The Pats will be able to use him everywhere along the defensive front as well as dropping him into coverage from time to time in zone blitz attacks.

While the Pats will probably also be interested in RB Mark Ingram here I think Watt is too perfect of a talent and fit for them to pass up. They would probably be just as happy with any of the other top RBs in the 2nd round or even later in the first. Don't forget that they own 2 more picks in the next 15 selections.

>>SKOHRboard & Stangs Mock Draft 2011, San Diego Chargers
Pick #18, Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson<<
by Dikembe

The Chargers biggest need is at DE and they are ecstatic that a top 10 talent like Bowers is able to fall to them at 18th overall. With a plethora of defensive ends in this draft, the Chargers were getting nervous as they started flying off the board and jump at the chance to take Bowers. Bowers clearly comes with some risk as he has had big time knee concerns after recent meniscus surgery. Some feel that he may have long term issues with the knee, but Bowers was recently cleared by several doctors in Indianapolis

Bowers has great size and remains very quick for that size. He has a solid burst and can come off the edge hard to rush the QB. He is also very good against the run, but will need to learn how to use his hands better as he gets to the NFL, as he wont be able to rely solely on his athleticism to make plays. He is only going to be 21 yrs old this year and may not be a full time starter right away in San Diego, but he possesses the ability to be a very good NFL player.

So far the SKOHRboard & Stangs League 2011 NFL Mock Draft looks like this

Man, these Justin!-free days are always so boring...

On the other hand, it looks like the run on defensive ends has begun now that the QB rush has stalled
