The 2011 Masters

The 2011 Masters started yesterday with a near record first round.  Co-leader at -7, Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, is the youngest first day leader ever at only 21 years of age.  While most of the attention is obviously focused on Phil and Tiger some of the best play came from relative unknowns to casual golf fans.  28 year old Alvaro Quiros, of Spain, is tied for the lead with McIlroy after Day 1.  Some other top finishers after the first day include; KJ Choi, YE Yang, Fred Couples, and Ricky Barnes.

While there isn't really a whole lot to think about or be super interested in at this point it was good to see some new faces playing well.  At least as far as I'm concerned golf has always seemed, with the exception of Tiger, best suited for older guys.  Now there are lots of younger guys in their 20s and even some 18 and 19 year old guys playing well and challenging the established "stars."  Golf could use an infusion of youth and hopefully they bring some excitement to the game.
